I've generally been wanting to improve my ability to sing harmonies, spurred on in part by an audition where my harmony skills let me down(!) and have been having lessons to help with this which have been really helpful. The gospel choir has further helped me develop these skills, and I'm seeing a lot of progress which is great. In July I performed with the choir at Gospel Fusion concert at Huddersfield town Hall along with other gospel choirs and amazing gospel artists. It was fantastic.
Another project which my harmony practice has come in useful for has been a new group Gareth and I have started singing with - called Steve Ansell and the Truth - which has been a lot of fun! Check out our facebook page. Also in the group is Jan Ansell. I met and started working with Steve and Jan for the Gi60 Theatre Festival in 2012 (you can read about this here and here!). Over the summer I sang with them (minus Gareth) at Bakewell Music Festival which was a really great weekend. And also at an event in Holmfirth. We had our first proper outing as a four at The Picturedrome in Holmfirth in November but I will do another post about that at some point! Very exciting!
Also over the Summer was involved with a little weekend called Bret Fest organised by Julie Boyle which was great fun. Played a few tunes Gareth, with Joshua Patel, and Ben Erridge.
I am really glad to be finding more opportunities for singing at the moment and will keep pursuing more!

When I wanted to get better at harmonies, I started listening to band s who were really good woth harmonies, and just picking and singing along. Now, I've found that I can hear harmony and also sing the part I hear most naturally...Does that even make sense?! You've got it in you, you just need to develop your ear.
Also, and this is a bit weird, but I trained my ear by going to a music room everyday at college and just pressing the keys. I hardly ever played anything. I just sat and pressed the keys, and got used to how they sounded. Of course, this would require either buying a keyboard, or borrowing one from a kind, keyboard-owning friend!
You'll get there, though!
